BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

These days it seems almost everyone is connected to their cell phones, and that attachment nearly cost a woman her life.

Emergency crews were called to Bay City’s west side just before 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 3 for reports of a woman who had just tumbled off the Liberty Bridge.

Bay City Public Safety Deputy Director Thomas Pletzke said the 40-year-old woman was walking alone on the bridge when she dropped her flip phone and lunged to grab it. In the process, she fell over the railing.

Officials found her about 40 yards from the Saginaw River in the grassy area just north of Pier 7 Marina.

Pletzke said she fell about 30 feet.

"I think God was looking after her, because to fall from that height, I think she's lucky to live to tell about it, in my opinion," said Doug Gamby, a Bay City resident.

Police say the woman never lost consciousness. In fact, once she land, she grabbed her phone and called 911 herself.

She was taken to the hospital with back injuries but is expected to recover.
