Michigan Road Trip: Detroit

DETROIT (WNEM) -

From historical buildings to modern businesses and restaurants, there’s a lot to see and do in downtown Detroit.

"People are hesitant about Detroit, and then when they come here and it's a lot nicer than they expected. And that can be in many ways, whether it's the architecture or they didn’t know some of the interesting things about our history. And they just see how clean it is and how much there is going on," said Bob Goldsmith with Detroit Urban Adventures.

On this Michigan Road Trip TV5 met up with Goldsmith who has been giving walking tours of the city for 15 years.

“You're hearing about it from someone who knows a lot about it. So you get some visitors that don't know much at all about Detroit, even some of the people that live in the suburbs. And when you're with someone who knows the history and what's happening now it's a real good use of your 2 hours."

The Renaissance Center, Detroit Riverwalk, Campus Martius Park and a ride on the Detroit People Mover are just some of the highlights of the tour.

"There's a lot more place to eat then there were before, nice restaurants too. And there's the new murals downtown making it more colorful and in general cleaner, safer, and better."

Just minutes from downtown families can head to the DNR Great Outdoor Adventures Center to get a taste of Michigan’s great outdoors.

“What we’re doing here is bring up-north, downtown,” said Linda Walter with DNR Outdoor Adventure Center.

Just more than a year old, the DNR Outdoor Adventure Center provides a hands-on experience for families to try some outdoor activities inside.

“It’s very much an active place. So we have a 38 foot giant tree, it has a secret staircase inside and you can climb up to the top to the second floor You can sit in a boat and fish electronically but with a real reel and string. You can sit in a kayak and learn to balance and paddle, you can play our laser shot game for ethical hunting," said Walter.

So whether you’re after an exciting adventure with the kids, or want to learn more about the city, one visit to Detroit could have you coming back soon for more.

“It’s changing people’s perceptions and making them think more favorably about Detroit,” said Goldsmith.
