New research suggests flossing may be pointless.

After years of doctors warning to brush and floss, the Department of Health and Human Services and Agriculture said the practice doesn't do a very good job fighting plaque.

A recent study by the Associated Press discovered there is no significant research that shows the benefit of flossing.

"It's a terrible idea not to floss," said Dr. Joseph Zolinski, dentist.

Dentists, including Zolinski, said the study is a load of plaque.

"You want to brush the teeth you want to keep and by brushing the teeth, you're only cleaning about 60 percent of the tooth. So you'll still have to floss to clean between the teeth," Zolinski said.

He said a study like this is just trying to get people to talk and he doesn't buy it one bit.

"Someone just got the idea to check into something and it was deleted from a recommendation. The AP picked it up and it's gotten a lot of traction to it," Zolinski said.
