SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

A popular animal at the Saginaw Children’s Zoo had to be put down after suffering from kidney failure.

After Kyra, the bobcat, was diagnosed with the disease zoo staff tried to help slow her decline by changing her diet.

But when she refused the new food, and took a sudden turn for the worse, the staff decided to euthanize her on Sunday rather than let her suffer.

Kyra was brought to the zoo after someone’s idea to have a bobcat as a house pet didn’t work out.

The person had gone so far as to remove her claws, meaning Kyra could never be released into the wild because she couldn’t defend herself.

Kidney failure is apparently common in felines, but there is no cure.
