FREELAND, MI (WNEM) -

Names like Simone Biles and Gabby Douglas have inspired a generation to take up gymnastics, a sport that often gets overshadowed outside the Olympics.

"It's really fun to have all the excitement around our sport and just to watch what they're doing and kinda work towards that," said Nora Fettinger, gymnast.

Fettinger, 17, knows a lot about hard work and dedication. She puts in five hours of training every day during the summer at Mid-Michigan Gymnastics in Freeland.

"People always say that we're crazy for doing what we do and say that they could never do it," Fettinger said.

Gymnasts of all ages have their eyes glued to the Olympics as their sport is thrust into the international spotlight. Some of them dream of joining Team USA one day.

"I think it's really cool, just watching people on events and stuff and hoping that you can be there some day," said Lucas Shelahowski, gymnast.

With so much excitement surrounding the sport at the Olympics, local gymnastic centers said they see more people signing up for classes to try out the bars and balance beams for themselves.

"We have a huge, huge increase in our enrollment because of the Olympics and it's good for all the gymnastics businesses out there," said George Young, owner of Mid-Michigan Gymnastics.

He said he's proud to see some of his gymnasts complete some of the same difficult moves as Olympic athletes.

"It's a huge wave of excitement in the gym. Our gymnasts get a chance to see that they're doing a lot of skills that they're going to see the Olympians doing as well," Young said.
