Clothing designer thanks Flint for placing in national contest

Posted: Updated:

A local clothing designer is stitching together a wardrobe he believes will help an entire city begin to dress for success.

He's already conquered a national business competition and the cash prize will help finance his next challenge.

"I'm on cloud 100 right now," said Oaklin Mixon, founder of Good Boy Clothing.

Mixon feels like he's floating because his clothing line not only made it to the final round of AT&T's National Small Business Agility Contest, but placed in the top two. He won $20,000. He said it's all thanks to social media and the city of Flint's collective support.

"The city really came behind us, voted for us, shared our campaign on Facebook and other social media sites. Really, really supported us wholeheartedly," Mixon said.

The New York born designer has had a vision for Good Boy Clothing. He said the name focuses on the good in the world.

His new neighbor, co-owner of Sutorial Boot and Shoe Makers, shares the same positive outlook.

"I think we're optimistic about downtown Flint and what we're doing in this space," Timothy Goodrich said.

By moving in the loft above Goodrich, Mixon hopes to bring with him a little bit of New York style to downtown Flint.

"I want to create something that can be a megaphone into the culture to push an ideaology out. Saying hey, let's seek the well-being of our world and the people around us," Mixon said.

The Good Boy Clothing story will open soon with apparel available online everywhere.
