SANILAC COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Two people were hurt after their small plane veered off the runway and into a large drainage ditch.

It happened on August 10 at 10:30 a.m.

The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Department was called to the Sandusky Airport after the 1940 Piper J5A Airplane that was flying in from Lapeer touched down on the grass runway without incident; but then went off the runway into the ditch.

The pilot, a 65-year-old man from Metamora, and his passenger, a 61-year-old man also from Metamora, were able to get out of the plane despite significant damage to the aircraft.

Both men were taken to McKenzie Hospital for injuries, although the severity is unclear.

The Federal Aviation Administration will be conducting an investigation.

The names of the men have not been released.
