Police crack down on distracted driving

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

If you've noticed an increase in state troopers on the roads lately, it's not by accident.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Tri-City Post are increasing patrols throughout the month of August.

Trooper Joseph Rowley said they're looking for something specific, distracted drivers.

"Today what we're focusing on is the actual distracted driver utilizing a cell phone or a mobile device while they're operating a vehicle," Rowley said.

Authorities said distracted driving covers a multitude of activities. It's not just using your phone or texting that's the problem. It could be something as simple as being over tired. By getting behind the wheel of a vehicle you're putting yourself and others at risk.

"Our mission out here isn't to write tickets for this, it's to reduce the number of traffic crashes, not just due to damage to vehicles, but ultimately people being hurt," Rowley said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said driver attention is the leading factor in most crashes.
