MISSOURI -

Michigan is no stranger to bad roads but what if the roads could pay for themselves?

It's what some innovative transportation workers are trying to make and the results are as pretty as they are useful.

The Missouri Department of Transportation is working with a startup company in Idaho to make solar powered pavement.

These plates will have an inch of tempered glass, concealing solar panels underneath.

They're designed for friction, and cooler yet, it lights up when you drive over.

It's not clear yet how much energy they'll be able to produce but the dream is to make a road that can produce electricity and melt snow in the winter.

Before that happens, the first solar sidewalk will be unveiled in Springfield by the end of the year.
