TUSCOLA COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A man was found dead in a manure pit at a Mid-Michigan dairy farm.

The 55-year-old was found as a large dairy farm on Arbela Road in Tuscola County's Arbela Township early Friday morning.

Officials were dispatched to the scene for a report of a man down, according to the Tuscola County Sheriff's Office.

The Millington Fire Department found the man inside the manure pit, which was about 8 feet by 8 feet and about 10 to 12 feet below ground level. There was about 12 to 16 inches of liquid manure at the bottom of the pit, the sheriff's office said.

The man was beyond medical assistance and pronounced dead at the scene.

The first responders had to call in the Region 3 Regional Response Team because of the hazards. The members of the team have specialized skills in dealing with hazmat and rescue situations.

The RRT conducted air quality tests and recovered the man's body, the sheriff's office said.

The incident remains under investigation.
