Family in need of help after losing everything in house fire

Posted: Updated:

A local family lost everything they own when a fire ripped through their Mid-Michigan home.

The Saginaw County family is now staying at a hotel, but they are worried about their children having clothes and supplies when they head back to school.

With just a few weeks until school, Nichole Huett's four children couldn't wait to show off their new school clothes and supplies.

"They kind of pranced around with their outfits and showed us their outfits and shoes and how they'd wear their stuff," Huett said.

Now it's all gone. A fire Saturday engulfed their home, destroying all of their belongings.

"With the fire and the smoke and the water, the house has been locked up for a few days and there's so much mold in there, there's nothing," Huett said.

Luckily for Huett, her family wasn't home at the time. They're all safe, but the toys, the photos and the memories that made up their life is gone.

"My babies' things, their first lock of hair, the first tooth that they lost, their first pacifier, all that. All that stuff is gone and there's nothing and nobody that can replace that ever," Huett said.

Even though a lot of the memories they made at the home can't be replaced, some of it can be. The back to school clothing and supplied the kids were so excited about will have to be bought again. For that, they may need a little help.

That's why Huett's sister-in-law set up a GoFundMe page hoping to help the family replace what they can.

"I showed up when the fire was still happening. They were crying. They had no school clothes. So now they can't go to school. They really do need the help. They have absolutely nothing, no clothes, no toys," said Lisa Switek, sister-in-law.

While asking for help isn't easy, Huett said any donation would help the family recover what they lost.

"It's almost like they're waiting for somebody who needs that help and they're right there. It's been amazing," Huett said.
