A new handgun shooting range is being built in suburban Detroit.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says its Pontiac Lake shooting range in Oakland County's Waterford Township will be closed weekdays starting Monday through Sept. 9 for construction. The range will remain open Saturdays and Sundays and normal hours will resume Sept. 10.
The new handgun range will be more accessible and feature five new shooting stations with structural sound-abatement engineering. Part of the project includes building an earthen backstop berm that the DNR says is for current and future range developments.
The range is located in the Pontiac Lake Recreation Area.
Funding from the Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act and the National Rifle Association Public Range Grant Program is helping pay for the project.
