LANSING, MI (AP) -

State officials are urging residents in Michigan's Lower Peninsula to prepare for possible flooding from heavy rain that's expected over the next 24 hours.

The state police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division says Monday that the National Weather Service is forecasting 1 to 4 inches of rain in some areas through 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Lansing, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo, Jackson and Battle Creek could receive some of the heaviest rain.

Capt. Chris Kelenske says motorists should take care not to drive through flooded roads.

People also are asked to avoid camping or parking along streams, rivers, and creeks during heavy rainfall because those areas can flood quickly and with little warning.
