Residents prepare for heavy rain

BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

Stan Liss said heavy rain consistently causes problems in his Bay City neighborhood.

"Backs up and then we get a flooded yard or road actually. It's impassible," Liss said.

He blames it on the city's old infrastructure. Monday night he took steps to prepare for the heavy rain potential.

"Move the car up there, clean the gutter out and that's about it. Just hope we don't get that much rain," Liss said.

Liss, with the help of his granddaughter, made sure the storm drain was cleaned out. Sewer experts said that's a good idea.

"Try to help out a little bit, keeps the water from coming into your house," said Freddy Escamilla with Dependable Sewer Service.

Escamilla said during heavy rain, homeowners need to keep a close eye on their basement.

"Check the floor drains once and while. Go in the basement and check the floor drains. The floor drains will tell you if your lines are starting to back up," he said.

Escamilla said heavy rain also stresses sump pumps and could cause them to fail.

"Dump some water just before it rains, make sure it's working properly and go from there. Honestly, if you know that's working then you're good, but a pump that's not working for a long time could fail within so much water coming in because it's not used to being run," Escamilla said.
