MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) -

Charges have been upgraded against two western Michigan men in connection with sexual assaults where date-rape drugs are alleged to have been used.

The Muskegon Chronicle reports Tuesday that 34-year-old Joshua Humphrey and 31-year-old Larry Stiff now are charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

They had been charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct in the case from earlier this year.

Defense attorneys for the men argued Monday in Muskegon County Circuit Court against the tougher charges.

Humphrey and Stiff also are charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct in connection with a 2013 case.

Investigators have identified other cases where date-rape drugs are believed to have been used.
