SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Our summer has been very dry across most of Michigan, with some areas even entering a severe drought last week, but persistent rain from the past weekend, and heavy rains that started off this week, have brought much needed relief to the region.

Where We Stand Now:

We saw very heavy rains to start the week, with many reports over 2 and 3 inches across mid-Michigan on Tuesday. These rains actually pushed Saginaw from a -1.48 inch rain deficit on the 11th, to a +1.29 inch surplus today. Houghton lake went from a -1.32 inch deficit to a 0.30 inch surplus, and Flint, while still -2.27 inches below where they should be this summer, knocked almost 3 inches off their deficit from this time about a week ago.

The good news extended to our drought conditions across the state. The rainy pattern over the last week removed all of the areas form Michigan that were under a severe drought, lowered the areas under a moderate drought from 12.8% last week to only 0.48% this week, and dropped the portion of the state seen as abnormally dry down to 36.45% from 44.03% last week.

Since the drought monitor is calculated on Tuesday morning, it did not even include the rainfall we picked up after 8 am Tuesday, or the rainfall from yesterday. Also with more rain in the forecast this weekend, our dry conditions should continue to improve as we head into the last weeks of August.
