Business owners, residents happy to see new sidewalks

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Construction barrels are all over downtown Saginaw as the city works to replace the sidewalks.

"When I heard about it, I don't want to say I was tickled pink, but it was really cool when we heard it was going to finally happen on our side," said Steve West, owner of Savoy Bar and Grill.

West looks forward to seeing brand new sidewalks outside his business.

"They were really broken up. They were hard to shovel in the winter. The one entrance to our parking lot wasn't an entrance, it was just driven over so many years that the sidewalk had fallen," West said.

The Savoy is open throughout the construction and so far the orange barrels haven't kept customers away.

"Hasn't really hurt our business at all. People think that it should have, but it hasn't. They've been very accommodating with keeping us open," West said.

Community members said they're happy to see the construction happening on the sidewalks and said the project is long overdue.

"I think it's terrific, especially what we're trying to do to take and elevate the status of our downtown area," Jim Nightingale said.

Once the new sidewalks are in, the city engineer said the roads will be resurfaced.
