Church helps students prepare to head back to class

A community expo at Kingdom of Heaven Ministries in Flint gave out all the necessary back to school supplies.

“It feels good to know I have everything I need for me to be successful in school, and I won’t have to worry about that,” said Miranda Spears, a student.

Thanks to a book bag filled with pencils, notebooks and erasers.

“We know that our education system is a little down, so we’re able to just give these kids a head start, the tools they need to get started,” said Marcellus Miller, the Youth Director at the church.

But also, the giveaway included something more for the crisis-stricken Flint.

Along with the backpack, parents and students were also able to get water bottles and testing done for lead.

“With the water situation, there were high levels of lead in our water. We were able to give away, give them the opportunity to give them lead tests to make sure they’re OK,” event organizer Katrina Cobb said.

Though, for many, it’s a piece of back to school they wish they could do without.

“It’s sad. It’s been going on for the better part of two years now and the progress has been real slow,” said Miller.
