SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Here at WNEM TV5, we are getting ready for another for another exciting year covering school news in our region.  To us, more than anything else, that means positive news publicizing the accomplishments of students and teachers in the area of academics and sports.

As the 20-16-2017 school year begins, we want to remind you about our school closings system designed to publicize school delays and closings in our area.   As we informed school superintendents and principals in the letter attached,  our automated system can be used by districts to change the operating status of their schools when inclement weather arrives or other issues that may prompt delays or closings.

We are also reminding districts to contact TV5 if they would like to record a Wake Up Call for our morning news.  These popular segments enable students to provide a "greeting" that airs during our morning news. Along those lines, we would also like to invite schools to participate in our re-launched Weather Kids segment in which meteorologists from our TV station visit classrooms to teach the kids about weather in our region.  Those can be coordinated with our Chief Meteorologist Bryan Bachman: Bryan.Bachman@wnem.com

With Friday Night Football about to kick off, we also want to remind everyone that WNEM TV5 and MY5 will provide high school football coverage you can count on.  Our Pigskin Preview show airs from 10:30pm to 11pm on Wednesday on MY5 and then again on WNEM TV5 from 11:15pm to 11:35pm, also on Wednesday.  Game coverage begins Thursday. If you have any questions or story ideas related to high school football, please contact Sports Director Scot Johnson: Scot.Johnson@wnem.com.

Finally, as we strive to find lots of positive stories to tell about local schools, I invite you to contact me when you have a story about a teacher, student, administrator, coach or school worker deserving a salute.  We love to tell those stories.  If you have one, contact me here at TV5: Ian.Rubin@wnem.com
