Woman receives maintenance help for her 100th birthday

A Mid-Michigan woman who was in desperate need of help, found relief from a group of volunteers.

The woman's homeowners insurance company was threatening to cut her off, but the repairs needed for her to keep her insurance will be made just in time for her 100th birthday.

Marie Hughes turned 100 on Aug. 21. Members of the Flint City Church showed up on Aug. 22 to help spruce up her home.

"It's something every church should do and I think all churches do to varying degrees. It's just a part of the testimony to be part of the community, to love on people. So if they're struggling, maybe they'll go to the church and let the church help," said Sharon Campbell, friend.

Campbell has adopted Hughes as her grandmother. She said Hughes' insurance company threatened to drop coverage because she had a reverse mortgage on the house.

"So being on a fixed income I knew that paying someone to come out and do the work was going to be quite a burden for her," Campbell said.

Campbell contacted her church, the Rock in Fenton, which also contacted the Flint City Church and volunteers turned out to do the work.

Hughes was pretty ecstatic about the help she's received from the volunteers.
