MT. PLEASANT, MI (WNEM) -

It's the time of year when parents and students scramble to get everything needed before heading back to school.

For most, the list keeps getting longer and the cost keeps climbing. Parents are feeling the pinch on their wallets as they run through the list of back to school supplies.

Merchandise Outlet of Mt. Pleasant is an independently owner and operated store specializing in liquidation sales. The owner, Mike Schuette, said they can offer school supplies at a cheaper price.

"We do see them coming in a lot actually. For us, a lot in the more inexpensive side and so we're able to offer those at a much steeper of a discount than you're able to get at the big box stores," Schuette said.

Parents will be looking for those discounts this year, perhaps more than ever.

According to Huntington Bank, parents of kids in elementary school should expect to spend about $659 on school supplies this year.

Parents of high schoolers should expect to spend about double that, $1,500. That's up nearly 7 percent from 2015.

As for Merchandise Outlet, they believe the rising costs have put them in a good position to offer the best deals to both parents and teachers who may be feeling the back to school crunch.

"Our sales are great. I mean, our customers like us and are loyal to us and understand that we're able to offer them a substantial discount and in our world of where we are now, discounting is great. And I think people are always looking for a deal, always looking for a bargain," Schuette said.
