The mayor of a small Michigan town suspended the police chief for five days for failing to wear a bulletproof vest.

Yale Chief Michael Redman says he wears the vest when he believes it's "prudent." But Mayor Richard Busch says that's not good enough. He says it's a safety issue.

Yale, population 2,000, is in St. Clair County, 65 miles northeast of Detroit. Yale is probably best known for its annual bologna festival.

The Times Herald in Port Huron says many residents attending a City Council meeting supported the chief Monday. Former Mayor Jim Cronin says the suspension was a "bullying exercise."

Redman says he's never been disciplined during decades of police work.
