FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

A group of friends shelled out hundreds of dollars to rent an elegant limousine for a ride to a concert last weekend, but they never expected what arrived to pick them up.

It might sound like something out of a bad comedy, but a busted up, broke-down van arrived to pick up the group. To make matters worse, the van actually broke down on them, leaving the group stranded.

"The limo arrived and it was not what we expected at all," said Lia Volpe, customer.

Volpe had big plans for her boyfriend's birthday. She was going to surprise him by taking him and a group of friends to a concert Sunday night. She ordered a limo that would fit eight people and paid $650 for it.

"There was holes on the ceiling. It was smelly. There was leftover makeup from a party before us. It was not at all what we expected," Volpe said.

Volpe said she decided to forget about the condition and enjoy the concert, but things only got worse. On the way home from the concert the van broke down on the side of the highway in the middle of the night.

"We were freezing. We were hungry. We were tired. We were just expecting to get home safely. That's why we ordered them to begin with," Volpe said.

She called friends to pick them up.

Volpe called the company to get her money back, but said they refused.

TV5 reached out to the company, DJ Limousines, to ask the tough questions. The company is based out of Grand Rapids.

The owner of the company said when the van broke down they offered the group an alternative ride, but the group turned down the offer.

The owner also said the group damaged the vehicle by breaking a karaoke mic and some of the interior lighting.

Volpe said the group did break the items, but it wasn't as much as the company said.

"So because of that he's choosing not to reimburse anything. Even though I am willing to pay for that. It got broken in the shuttle of things," Volpe said.

As it stands, Volpe said she is out of her money and just wants some compensation for her birthday surprise turning into such a horrible night.

"It was a lot for a service we didn't fully get. We were taken to the concert, but not taken home," Volpe said.
