DETROIT (AP) -

A Detroit police patrol vehicle was struck by gunfire as a man fired on two officers with an assault rifle.

Police Chief James Craig tells reporters Wednesday that at least 10 shots were fired late Tuesday night at the officers on the city's northwest side.

Their vehicle was hit three times, but the officers were not wounded.

The officers returned fire and the shooting suspect fled. A 40-year-old man turned himself in Wednesday afternoon to police.

Craig said investigators believe the shooting "was intentional based on the circumstances" and that it "should be a reminder of the danger" officers face.

The officers were investigating a dice game at the time of the shooting.
