Virus detected at county fair; 100 chickens to be killed

SANDUSKY, Mich. (AP) -

Dozens of chickens at a Michigan county fair will be killed after one was diagnosed with a highly contagious respiratory disease.

April Malick of the Sanilac County fair says it was a tough moment: She had to tell 100 kids who participate in 4-H that their chickens would be euthanized Friday.

There was a risk that the virus could be carried home and then spread across the state.

Another 25 ducks, pigeons, geese and turkeys will be spared at the fair in Michigan's Thumb region.

Malick tells the Port Huron Times Herald that the kids supported the decision to stop the spread of the disease. She says she's proud of them.
