A new contract means higher pay, more paid time off and increased company 401K plan matching for thousands of Meijer employees.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 951 tells TV5 that new, four-year contracts have gone into effect for more than 27,000 employees.

The contracts cover people who work in distribution centers as well as retail, and also includes transportation workers.

In the deal the starting wages were increased and top wage rates were also raised.

Workers will also get more paid time off for those hired after Oct. 23, 2005, and see the elimination of the 20-hour per week average to get paid time off.
