History was made this weekend when Dathan Ritzenhein became the first American in more than two decades to win the 10-mile run at the Crim Festival of Races.

Even in its 40th year, the annual festival in downtown Flint did not lack in participants or energy.

Nate Morgan finished the 10-mile race and loved seeing his hometown come together for a variety of celebrations.

"It's beautiful, a lot of support, very great,” Morgan said.

Whether participants were walking, running, or simply supporting, Flint's annual Crim Festival brought out the best in everyone involved. Smiling faces and energetic attitudes filled the downtown streets as the community was able to revel in a long-standing tradition.

"It's kind of touching really to see all of the people coming out. It's like a river of people it just didn't stop and for this to be year 40 it just lets you know what kind of tradition this is for the city of Flint,” Mayor Karen Weaver said.

Weaver said she hopes an event like the Crim Races show another side of the city she loves, not just one in crisis.

“One of the things that I hope happens is all of the people that have come from other places go back and tell this positive story about the city of Flint and what's going on here today,” Weaver said.

Lt. Governor Brian Calley agrees. He not only finished the 10-mile race but believes this event is a momentum builder for positivity.

"For people outside maybe that haven’t been here in a little while and all they know is what they saw on the news months ago. To see the vibrancy and positive activity that's happened the way the community is pulling together this gritty toughness that people in Flint have,” Calley said.

With such a high turn-out, folks are looking forward to doing it all again next year.

One of the proud racers this year was TV5’s David Custer. He took part in the 10-mile race to mark five years since he completed it the first time.

David said he was just happy he was able to get it done.

Congrats to everyone who participated this year!
