SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

This Labor Day, Michigan Blood is encouraging residents to honor a hero by donating blood.

Fifteen years ago, more than 400 firefighters and police officers lost their lives during the 9/11 terror attacks.

Many other first responders continue to put their lives on the line every day.

Every person who attempts to donate blood Thursday, September 1 through Monday, September 5, at any Michigan Blood donor center will receive a $10 gift card courtesy of Meijer.

After donating, donors are invited to sign a thank you card that will be delivered to local first responders in honor of the 15th Anniversary of 9/11.

Any healthy person 17 or older (or 16 with parental consent) who weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to donate, although females age 18 and under must weigh 120 pounds or more.

Blood donors should bring photo ID, and appointments are preferred, but not mandatory.
