A Mid-Michigan woman was honored Tuesday night for making her community a better place.

Doris Jacques, 90, was the recipient of an award so prestigious it was presented by Gov. Rick Snyder.

Jacques was awarded the Gov. George Romney Lifetime Achievement Award for her time volunteering with her church and St. Mary's Hospital.

She is one of the people who helped get the hospital's gift shop started in 1960. Decades later she still spends countless hours making sure hospital visitors get what they need.

"Keep busy, keep going. The more you do, the better you feel about it," Jacques said.

Those who work with her say her dedication is unmatched.

"We have dubbed her the energizer bunny. She runs circles around all of us here," said Karen Stiffler, with the St. Mary's of Michigan Foundation.

Jacques received the award at the Temple Theater in Saginaw.

Snyder said it's people like her whose selfless efforts leave a lasting impact on communities like Saginaw.

Jacque was quick to say it's not just her making the difference.

"It's very rewarding, but I really feel like it's an award that should go to all volunteers. Especially at the hospital I've continued to help at, so that includes all the volunteers," Jacques said.
