SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Some changes are coming to the Stars bus system and the agency sought the public's input.

The bus service discussed a fare increase at a hearing Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Stars transit facility.

The new rate would cause an increase from a $1.25 to a $1.50. This increase would in turn help bring back limited Saturday service in Saginaw.

The Saturday service would include running main routes from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the lift service from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

"I was riding the buses and our riders have made it clear to me, when I was asking them what kind of service they'd like to see, that they wanted Saturday service to return," said Glenn Steffens, STARS site manager.

Riders at the meeting said 25 cents was a small price to pay for better service.

"I hope that you'll repair the air conditioning on the buses. A lot of them are like riding in a gold fish bowl," said Cleveland Coleman, rider.

STARS board member Blanche Clark admitted there is still work to do, but said the public support was reassuring. It solidified her vote to approve the rate hike.

"They didn't have a problem with the quarter and like the gentleman said, 'what are you gonna get for a quarter anymore?' But it's exciting," Clark said.
