Study: Number of parents not vaccinating children on rise

Posted: Updated:

New figures show 87 percent of pediatricians report parents refused to vaccinate their child in 2013.

That's up nearly 10 percent from seven years earlier.

"When you get these vaccinations you can get side effects from them or you [can die] from them," said Aesha Howard, mother.

Howard is a mother of three and said no to some vaccinations for her kids as they get ready to start another school year.

"I believe sometimes it's worse when you get a vaccination. Some say that you can get a cold when you start getting these shots. It just makes you worry more," Howard said.

More and more parents are saying the same thing. The American Academy of Pediatrics released a report this week that said nearly 90 percent of doctors have seen parents refuse vaccines for their children.

Tynisha Gallardo is not one of them.

"I do not feel like there is any kid that should go without being vaccinated being that there is a lot of diseases that are out here. Some you can't cure, some you can," Gallardo said.

Russell Bush, with the Saginaw Health Department, said the state sets the guidelines on the vaccinations children should get and when, especially if attending a public school.

While some parents forgo them all together, Bush does not believe that is a good idea.

"It's the only way that vaccine-preventable diseases can be kept in check so you don't end up with these major outbreaks," Bush said.

He said there is a lot of misinformation out there and he thinks vaccines do more good than harm.

Howard said she will get the ones that are mandatory, but will not allow doctors to inject her kids with anything else.

"I tell them no. I'm the type, I look at the side effects and all of it. I worry too much," Howard said.
