CLARE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A woman charged in connection with the death of her father will spend time behind bars.

Leonard Hempel’s body was found buried in his Clare County backyard in April 2016. The 54-year-old’s home was located on South Road in Surrey Township. He was missing for several weeks.

On Thursday, Sept. 1, a judge sentenced his daughter, Angela Hempel, to one year behind bars. She pleaded guilty to lying about her father’s death after it happened, continuing to cover up his death and knowing where the man’s body was buried and not reporting it.

Angela Hempel was originally charged with open murder.

Her boyfriend, James Kuhns, is accused of killing Leonard Hempel.
