Fans kick off CMU home opener with tailgates, family

This is the time of year the some people live to love.

Central Michigan University football opened up their season in Mt. Pleasant on Thursday and with it came the fun.

"The priorities are God, family and football. Part of this is family. Some of these people I tailgate with, I grew up with since we were 8-years-old," said Lauchlin MacGregor, CMU alumnus.

He hasn't missed a CMU home game in 40 years. MacGregor said football is only part of the draw.

"We love the football, but we love the camaraderie, the games, the food, the friendship. That's what it's all about," he said.

On the other side of the stadium the students got together early for a party of their own. Police were in full force making sure nothing got too far out of hand.

"One of the big things we look for of course is underage drinking. Whenever we run across one of those incidents we deal with them and again looking for anybody that [is] in any type of safety need or medical need," said Lt. Cameron Wassman, with the CMU Police Department.

Wassman said there weren't any big issues and everyone kept it fun.

MacGregor said that's how it should be.

"All of these people are part of my family. We're all the CMU family," he said.
