DETROIT (AP) -

A tanker fire on an Interstate 75 bridge in southwest Detroit shut down a stretch of the freeway.

Video broadcast by WDIV-TV showed the tanker burning on the Rouge River bridge on Friday morning. Crews doused the flames, leaving the tanker smoldering.

No injuries were reported and the roadway initially was closed in both directions.

Traffic was routed away from the scene of the fire. Northbound lanes reopened Friday morning, followed by two southbound lanes between I-96 and Fort St/Schaefer in Metro Detroit before noon.

Click on Detroit reported the driver of the semi was on his way to the Marathon refinery to fill up when a tire popped and he pulled over. The driver grabbed his fire extinguisher and tried to put out the blaze. When his extinguisher ran out, he called the fire department.

The fire had reignited and engulfed the truck by the time firefighters arrived.

Investigators believe the brake or wheel bearing issue caused friction.
