Saginaw Club receives renovations

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

A club that has included movers and shakers for decades in the Great Lakes Bay Region has had a makeover.

A couple of members of the Saginaw Club gave TV5 a tour of the historical landmark.

The club was organized in 1889. Lumber barons and community leaders made up the club and since that time community leaders have graces its interior.

"We're really proud of our heritage here and the club is still vibrant and ready to go," said Jim Hayes, with the club.

Club members spent $175,000 on the renovation project, which began last April. The work included woodwork around the building, porch repair and new carpeting.

Jerry Bergman is a member of the club, but he is also an architect. He is happy with the outcome of the renovations.

"That is what's so gratifying about having been able to do the project because it's a building that really needs to be preserved in downtown Saginaw and throughout Saginaw County," Bergman said.

Famous visitors to drop by the club include former President William Howard Taft and Vice President Gerald Ford.
