FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

A Flint city council member is behind bars for allegedly driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Councilman Wantwaz Davis was in a crash on I-69 around midnight Friday night. Michigan State Police said Davis refused to take a breathalyzer test.

He was later taken to the Genesee County jail on suspicion of driving impaired.  A search warrant was obtained for his blood level at the time of the crash.

Davis said he was trying to outrun two cars that were chasing him with a gun at the time of the incident.

"I was chased. That was the reason for the accident. People chasing me in my car on my way to pick my wife up from work on Van Slyke. And if I'm on Hammburger and she works right around the corner, why would I take 69 west," Davis said.

He said police should have investigated who was chasing him rather than take him to jail. Davis said he didn't do anything wrong.
