DETROIT (AP) -

A 2-year-old boy has been rescued from the Detroit River after he was reported missing near a beach waterslide at Belle Isle park.

WXYZ-TV reports that an off-duty firefighter pulled the child to shore Monday night.

State police say two children first spotted the boy who had floated on his back about 1,000 yards down the river and 25 yards offshore.

The boy was taken to a hospital for treatment, and was reported breathing and in stable condition Monday night.

Authorities closed off Belle Isle while they searched for the boy. Some visitors were forced to remain on the island during the search.

Police say troopers were directed to stop all traffic leaving the island and check each vehicle for the boy.
