SANILAC COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A man carried his neighbor to safety after noticing her house was on fire.

The fire happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday on the 2400 block of Black River Street in Deckerville. That's in Sanilac County.

The front porch of the woman's home caught on fire and spread to the south end of the home, the Sanilac County Sheriff's Office said.

Before first responders arrived to the scene, the man noticed his neighbor's house was on fire and made entry into the back entrance of the home. He then carried the woman, who is in a wheelchair, from the burning home, the sheriff's office said.

The Deckerville Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire before it caused additional structure damage.

The incident remains under investigation.

The local Red Cross was contacted and is assisting the family, according to the sheriff's office.
