It has one of the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases in Michigan, so Kalamazoo County is trying an unconventional way to reduce the number.

The county health department is going to college campuses and handing out condom necklaces.

The condoms have clever phrases and pictures on them, all designed with a higher purpose than mere physical enjoyment.

"The Mardi Gras necklaces with the condom was a good marketing tool to grab the attention so that we were able to provide the education,” said Lynn Norman, the director for health services in Kalamazoo County.

It’s education aimed at bringing down Kalamazoo County’s STD rate of 249 per 100,000 people.

It’s only second to Detroit.

The necklaces are definitely being noticed.

“I mean, it was a fun way to just kind of hand them out. So I liked it, I thought it was fun,” freshman Rosie Fricko said.

For students, the more creative the message, the more likely they’ll remember.

“People come back with their friends and like I had to bring my friend over here so they can see all the stuff that you had. Give them our business card and let them see our hours and everything. They were really excited,” said Angel Strong, a public health nurse.

The health department will hand more out during the Western Michigan University-Bronch bash.
