Midland heats up for annual Balloon Glow

The kids’ eyes lit up almost as bright as the downtown Midland skies.

“When the fire’s really close, I jump up and down," Wyatt said.

Wyatt got excited as hot air balloon pilots fired the burners into the sky. His uncle, Ryan Martin, said the balloon fest is one of the city’s gems.

“It’s a very fun thing to see and we look forward to it every year, I’d say, and the kids do enjoy it,” Martin said.

Thursday night’s burner glow kicked off the weekend of festivities in Midland.

More than 30 hot air balloons will fly the skies but before they do, people had a chance to meet the pilots that fly them.

“It’s actually great to be able to have something like this in our town that we can look forward to every year. I’ve been bringing him to it since he was a baby, especially the glow that’s his favorite part,” said Jessica Cunningham, who brought her son Dominic.

Local businesses also welcome the added business.

Thousands of people will be in Midland.

Marinell Schafer, who owns Diamond Jim’s, said it’s a good economic shot in the arm.

"Good for the businesses, the merchants, and it's also good for the community, you know, because a lot of times they incorporate in some nice family events,” Schafer said.

Many people said they appreciate the family draw.

"It's a really cool thing to have here,” Martin said.
