Blue Star Memorial pays tribute to Michigan veterans

CARO, MI (WNEM) -

A brand new monument pays tribute to veterans across Michigan who risked their lives for our freedom and to those who paid the ultimate price.

A Blue Star Memorial sits in the middle of a place where life grows eternal – a botanical garden in Caro.

"It is more than I had envisioned at the beginning of this journey,” Mariann Saenen said.

Saenen’s journey started about a year ago. She was with some friends traveling around Lake Huron when they came across a Blue Star Memorial.

She decided then and there Caro needed a similar memorial, so the president of the Caro Garden Club got to work, and with the cooperation of the entire community, came up with the tribute plaza.

“Without the community, this would not have happened,” Saenen said.

Peter Diller also did quite a bit to make sure this plaza became a reality and people are pretty excited about it.

"We're getting calls from Florida, from California, about it. People have learned about the Blue Star Memorial tribute to America's men and women,” Diller said.

Names on the bricks date all the way back to the War of 1812.

There's a Congressional Medal of Honor winner and someone most of us know, a brick for Sgt. Travis Mills who is now an inspirational speaker.

A veteran from the Thumb region also has his name on one of the bricks and he came all the way from Virginia for Saturday’s event.

Former Navy Seal Mike Megge will be the master of ceremonies for the event.

"I mean, it's very important. I've got three generations in these bricks, my great-great grandmother, my grandfather, myself, my older brother, and it's important to be able to bring generations back to remember the sacrifices and the importance of our country and the sacrifices that not only the service members but their families make in protecting this great country,” Megge said.

The Blue Star Memorial plaza will be dedicated Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
