GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Local health officials are reporting an increase in a gastrointestinal illness that can lead to diarrhea.

Officials with the Genesee County Health Department report seeing an uptick in Shigella in the county, and across the state.

The bacteria causes mild to severe diarrhea, and can also include symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, cramps and bloody stools.

Health Department officials say that Shigella is spread through a fecal-oral route. That means the bacteria in the stool is spread by contaminated hands, surfaces, food or water.

Proper hand washing of at least 20 seconds of warm water and soap can stop the spread of the illness.
