Treatment underway to control invasive plants along Saginaw Bay

Posted: Updated:

Efforts to control dense infestations of invasive weeds along the Saginaw Bay began on Monday.

The Bay County Environmental Affairs and Community Development department said treatments to control Phragmites will be done along the shoreline of the Saginaw Bay in Bay, Tuscola and Arenac counties.

Aerial spray treatments will be done by Hamilton Helicopters, Inc. of Hamilton, Michigan between Sept. 12 and Oct. 31.

The exact day and time of the treatments will be determined by whether the weather conditions are suitable for the treatments.

The herbicides used in the treatment can cause damage to any plant that they contact.

People and pets should avoid contact with the treated areas until spray solution has dried (approximately six hours).

Lake water in the treatment areas should not be used for irrigation for at least 24 hours after treatment.
