FLINT, MI (AP) -

A mobile grocery market in Flint is part of an effort to improve healthy food options in the city.

The Community Foundation of Greater Flint, Flint Food Works, The Local Grocer, the Neighborhood Engagement Hub and YMCA of Greater Flint are among those involved. Organizers say Tuesday the market is operating as a permanent route is created.

he Flint Fresh Mobile Market will bring fresh, healthy foods to neighborhoods, places of worship and senior centers. The 14-passenger bus will be used to set up carts with produce, pantry staples and ready-to-eat options.

Efforts to improve nutrition in Flint have taken on more urgency amid the city's crisis with lead-tainted water.

Nutritious food can limit the effects of lead exposure. If consumed, lead can cause developmental delays and learning disabilities.
