GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Some local employees traded building cars for building homes with Habitat for Humanity on Tuesday.

"It's great to kind of get out of the office and get your hands dirty and do things I don't normally do," said Audrey O'Connor, General Motors volunteer.

She was one of the many GM volunteers who partnered with the Genesee County Habitat for Humanity to fix up a local home.

"To be able to give back to somebody who can walk in and have a smile on their face because their home got renovated, probably makes their lives a little bit easier," O'Connor said.

More than 250 GM employees volunteered during this year's Team GM Cares Week.

Genesee County volunteer coordinator Greg Hull said it really shines a light on the partnership between GM and Habitat for Humanity.

"This is just really for us, a showcase of the tremendous partner GM has been because this is GM Cares Week, but GM truly does care year round. They help us a lot throughout the year," Hull said.

Team GM Cares Week started on Monday and runs through Friday. They cover five different locations throughout Genesee County. Some of the homes have been completely gutted and are being restored.

"Everybody has a smile on their face. Everybody is getting dirty. Everybody is sweaty. Everybody is working hard, but everybody has a smile on their face," said Mark Fishwick, voluneer coordinator for GM.
