FENTON, MI (WNEM) -

A man who was unaccounted for after firefighters knocked down flames at his home was apparently not home at the time.

The fire started at about 7:15 a.m. at a home near the intersection of Eddy Lake and Grange Hall Road (Main Street) in the Genesee County community of Fenton.

When firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed. The fire started in a lower section of the house, according to police at the scene.

There was concern about the homeowner after officials were unable to locate him.

Fenton Fire Chief Bob Cairnduff now reports that the man was up north at the time of the fire.

Investigators said the home is a total loss, and the cause is under investigation.
