Much needed aid to Flint came in an odd way, but dozens are thankful they could have a clean shower for the first time in more than two years.

Lynn Luelen said Flint needs help. She came out on Wednesday to show her support at a water distribution site that was offering bottled water and showers.

At a hearing Wednesday morning, the state painted a different picture. They argued the water is completely safe as long as people have working filters.

Melissa Mays said she doesn't agree with the state and was there to give a deposition.

"I was shocked that the state was putting the responsibility on the residents to be able to get their own help. And I feel sad because they were blaming the residents for not knowing about different resources, but people don't know what you don't tell them," Mays said.

During deliberations in federal court in Detroit, the state argued they already provide water delivery systems when it comes to bottled water, but there isn't money for much more.

Water advocates said while there is some state assistance and water delivery programs, it's just not enough. They cited issues such as transportation, illiteracy and language barriers.

"One thing hat has come out today is that the lack of information has been disseminated to residents is horrifying," Mays said.

She said there are a lot of unnecessary measures for residents to take to move forward, but a lot of the work falls on volunteers.

Dr. Lee Bell attended the event in Flint that allowed residents to shower on Wednesday. He said he hopes the federal judge sides with the advocacy groups.

"I definitely think more aid is needed, but not only the water and the wipes, but we need pipes. We need educational pieces for our young people," Bell said.
