MICHIGAN, (WNEM) -

A recently proposed bill would create more protection for motorists who pay for gas using their credit card, which can then be swiped by scammers using skimmers.

House Bill 5979 would require gas stations with credit card scanners to restrict unauthorized access of customer’s payment card information.

State officials revealed earlier this month about 70 credit card skimmers were found at Michigan gas stations.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, which inspects the pumps, said skimmers can be installed in seconds and cannot be seen from outside the pump.

Criminal open the pumps with keys and use the device to copy customer’s credit card information.

The device was first discovered more than a year ago.

The bill was introduced by Rep. Ben Glardon of Owosso.
