The Zilwaukee Police Department are warning residents to be alert of their surroundings after a stranger danger incident was reported at an area park.

It happened about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Zilwaukee River Park Playscape.

An unknown man approached a child at the playground and asked if he wanted free candy and to go with him, police said.

The suspect was described as a male in his 20s about 5'8 to 5'9 with a slim build. He had medium-length blond curly hair, brown eyes and was wearing a brown shirt and jeans.

He got into a black vehicle that possibly had two doors and headed southbound on Westervelt, police said.

There have not been any other reports of similar incidents.

Veronica McLain was surprised to hear about the incident. She said she brings her daughters to the park at least twice a week. While they usually feel safe, she made sure to remind both of them the rules for staying safe.

"Like for an example, don't take candy from a stranger. Don't get a ride from someone you don't even know," her daughter Alexandria said.

Kyla is the older sister. She said she's always on the lookout for danger and a person up to no good is not welcome at her family's favorite spot.

"It's stranger danger. Stay away from the kids and don't ever come back here," Kyla said.

She said her mother taught her to be vigilant, a tactic she now teaches her little sister.

"I tell her if you see somebody coming up to you or asks you for a ride or wants some candy say no, run and scream," Kyla said.

Police are warning residents to call 911 if they feel someone is loitering around their child.
