FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

The deadline looms as contract negotiations continue between a nurses union and a local hospital.

Some worry McLaren's nurses could go on strike by the end of the month if a deal is not reached in time.

"Everything would be all messed up," said Patricia Watkins.

Watkins has a daughter at McLaren-Flint. She said the nurses there are key in helping her daughter get better.

"They mean a whole lot to me. When my daughter is sick because she has problems with her knees real bad, they have done two surgeries and she is in here now," Watkins said.

A negotiation team has been working on a new deal for nearly a year. The Local Nurses Union 875 said their primary focus is patient safety, nurse to patient ratios, overtime caps and a safe working environment.

The union representative said they have not reached an agreement and will have a strike vote on Sept. 29.

McLaren-Flint released the following statement:

The parties worked late into Friday night on an agreement and continue to work together to hammer out the details of the contract.

As for Watkins, she said she has faith the nurses will get what they deserved.
